Cairns Regional Council Revegetation Of Natural Areas: 2023.

Madjandji Traditional Owners have been actively involved in stewardship activities to improve the condition of an unmanaged council reserve located within the Madjandji Ancestral Estate. This area, which includes a known Cassowary habitat, is currently impacted by invasive environmental pest plants encroaching from residential properties.

The proposed project will focus on a 1.7 km stretch of coastline within the reserve, prioritizing habitat protection through targeted weed control (including Weeds of National Significance – WONS) and systematic site assessments. These assessments will aim to safeguard both the environmental integrity and the cultural values of the area.

Rangers will document the presence and extent of marine debris, feral pig damage, and signs of yellow crazy ants. Collaboration with key partners—Cairns Regional Council (CRC), Wet Tropics Management Authority (WTMA), and Tangaroa Blue—will be central to this initiative. A stakeholder meeting will be scheduled to share project progress, evaluate findings, and provide recommendations for ongoing habitat protection and enhancement.
