Helping Country “Caring for Gulgibarra Land & Sea Country”: 2024-2025.
Marine Debris Monitoring and Clean-up.
The Madjandji Aboriginal Corporation is committed to advancing the aspirations set out in our Country Based Plan for Looking After Gulgibarra Land & Sea Country. As part of this commitment, we seek to implement a targeted marine debris monitoring and clean-up program aimed at protecting the ecological and cultural integrity of our banas (creeks), shorelines, and islands — all vital parts of the Great Barrier Reef environment.
Gulgibarra Land & Sea Country includes the sandy lower reaches of the Mulgrave and Russell Rivers Catchment, their feeder creeks, and the coastline stretching north from the river mouths to Coopers Point. This area holds deep cultural significance and supports diverse marine and coastal ecosystems.
The project is funded by The Department of Environment and Energy and Great Barrier Reef Foundation:
To conduct regular, scheduled monitoring and collection of marine debris at two or more culturally significant banas.
Extend and build on the marine debris clean-up efforts initiated in 2023.
Collaborate with Frankland Island Cruises and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service & Partnerships (QPWS&P) Marine Parks, who have committed to participating in regular coastal clean-up activities.
