Land Restoration: Niringa Creek: 2024-2025.
Madjandji Aboriginal Corporation is collaborating with the Reef and Rainforest Research Centre and local landowners to undertake the following initiatives:
Restoration of Native Flora: We are working to restore the native floral composition along Niringa Creek. This effort aims to improve biodiversity values, enhance habitat connectivity, reduce weed populations, and improve water quality.
Management of Tilapia Populations: To address the invasive Tilapia species, we are implementing habitat modification strategies. These include:
• Reducing invasive weeds.
• Establishing sediment traps to limit fish movement in drainage systems.
• Physically trapping fish during periods of lower water levels.Control of Wild Pig Populations: Our efforts also focus on targeting reproductive female pigs to disrupt breeding cycles and reduce local populations.
• Collaboration with key partners will facilitate efficient surveillance and culling strategies, while also considering public perceptions regarding the management of carcasses.Role of Madjaybana Rangers: The Madjaybana Rangers play a critical role in monitoring the effectiveness of these management strategies, ensuring that our conservation efforts yield positive results.

Expected Outcomes: This collaboration aims to promote community participation, enhance native biodiversity, and improve the resilience of coastal habitats, all while effectively managing invasive species. Our integrated approach seeks to restore ecological balance through our partnership with the Reef and Rainforest Research Centre and local stakeholders involved in conservation efforts.
