Terrain-Funded Weed Management Project Report

A collaborative project funded by Terrain and co-planned with the Department of Resources (Resources) and Cairns Regional Council (CRC) has targeted Weeds of National Significance (WONS) species invading littoral forest areas.

The following high-priority weeds, as identified on the Terrain WONS list, were treated during this initiative:

  • Bamboo (Bambusa spp.)

  • Coconut (Cocos nucifera)

  • Lantana (Lantana camara)

  • Pond Apple (Annona glabra)

  • Singapore Daisy (Sphagneticola trilobata)

In addition to these, Hymenachne, which is not listed on the Terrain WONS list but has been identified by CRC as a pest species, was also recorded. Rangers noted the presence of several other lower-priority weed species during their assessments.

A joint report has been produced, outlining key recommendations to enhance future management of the site. These include prioritising habitat protection through targeted WONS species control and conducting regular site assessments to safeguard the area’s significant environmental and cultural values.
