Traditional Owner Healthy Water: Great Barrier Reef Foundation Symposium: 2025

Our Madjaybana ranger team attended the 2025 Traditional Owners Grants Gathering, hosted by the Great Barrier Reef Foundation at the Pullman Hotel in Cairns.

This significant event brought together Traditional Owners and other likeminded stakeholders to share knowledge, celebrate achievements, and discuss strategies for preserving the Great Barrier Reef.

NAIDOC 2020 Activities

Wanyurr-Majay Aboriginal Corporation and Elders were invited by McDonnell Creek State School to celebrate NAIDOC Week, so back to school we went. McDonnell Creek State School consists of 12 children and 3 teachers positioned right next to the highway; this is a small school with generations of history with not only some of our elders going to this school but also some of their children.

We started our day of by having ‘welcome to country’ by Jamie Satani in language and then the opening the yarning circle. We spoke about the significance of yarning circles, music and NAIDOC week.

The Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006 (CATSI Act) says that every corporation must create and abide by a set of rules. This is commonly referred to as our Rule Book or Constitution.

On 26 March 2020 the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations (ORIC) provided information on their website about how Aboriginal Corporations would need to be innovative during this time, especially where it is not possible to hold face to face meetings.
